Recently elected officers of the 2009-2010 Lamar University Alumni Advisory Board are Jill Roy of Beaumont, president; Dennis Moncla of Beaumont, secretary; and Don Burnett of Lumberton, past-president. Clayton Lau III of Baytown will serve as president-elect.
New members of the board are Bernard Daleo Jr., Louis Falgout, Karol Gammill, Gillian Jenkins, Stephanie Molina, Brenda Nichols and Cullen Ramsey Sr., all of of Beaumont; Vernon Durden of China; and Terry Rogers of Lumberton.

SETXsocialcenter.com Announces This Week’s Southeast Texas Events
Southeast Texas, September 27 – SETXsocialcenter.com, a free calendar for all local events in Southeast Texas, brought to you courtesy of Tim and Cody Bauer with Texas Financial in Winnie, Texas, is pleased to announce the events of its member organizations for the week of September 27, 2009.
It’s a week of good eats, fascinating speakers, hearty brew, lively entertainment, an expo and even a used book sale!
First, let Journey start your week as they rock Ford Park Sunday night!
Second, settle into Monday by hitting the golf course for Leadership Beaumont. This golf tournament hosted by the Greater Beaumont Chamber of Commerce is September 28 at Idylwild Golf Course. Lunch will be served first at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. The Chamber will also host the ribbon cutting of the Red Roof Inn and Suites at 2310 South IH-10 on October 1 at 4:00 p.m. If you would like more information about either of these events call 409-838-6581.
Third, dance and eat all week because, it’s bring your friend to dance class at City Dance Center at 3015 Dowlen Road. Call 409-833-7772 for more information. And it’s Texas Restaurant Roundup at Spindletop Restaurant and Continental Cuisine. And the eating continues…Tuesday, September 29 Fuddruckers at Parkdall Mall is donating percentage of their proceeds to the American Heart Association. Call 409-898-8973 for more information. But, the big eating event begins Wednesday, September 30 at noon – the Winnie Rice Festival at Winnie Stowall Park. It continues through October 4! Wash down your Winnie rice balls with AMSET beer. This annual event is October 1 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas. Tickets are $50 for nonmembers and $35 for members. Call 409-832-3432 to get more info.

There are two opportunities this week to hear interesting speakers. The first is Monday, September 28 at Lamar University. Norman Spivey will perform a one-man on the life and music of French composer Reynaldo Hahn at 7:30 p.m. Call 409-880-8144 for more information. The second opportunity to be inspired is Tuesday, September 29 at the Holiday Inn on Walden Road. The Hope Women’s Resource Clinic is hosting its annual gala with featured speaker Bruce Wilkinson. October 1 is also the day for the Better Business Bureau 2009 Southeast Texas Senior Celebration & Consumer Expo for adults of all ages. Admission is FREE! Parking is FREE! Downtown Beaumont is hopping Saturday, October 3. The Used Book Sale sponsored by the friends of the Beaumont Public Library System is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Beaumont Civic Center meeting rooms and promises to be the biggest in history. The fifth of six free genealogical workshops will take place at the Tyrrell Library from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. Call 409-833-2759 for more information. (Beaumont, TX) – The Beaumont Public Library System will be holding its semi-annual book sale at the Beaumont Civic Center in the Center’s meeting rooms on Saturday, October 3, 2009. Doors will open for the book sale at 8:00 AM and close at 4:00 PM. Come early and get first choice. This will be one of the largest book sales in our history and will include ex-library materials, donated items, old magazines from the l930’s thru 1970’s, new and old books, and more. Highlights include several thousand children’s books and even a section of specially priced older, rarer books.
Prices for ex-library books begin at $.10 each and donated books begin at $.50 each. Magazines will be three for $1.00. At 3:00 PM book prices will drop to half price.
Library bags will also be available for purchase with plastic totes at $1.00 and logo canvas bags at $10.00.
The Beaumont Civic Center is located at 701 Main Street in downtown Beaumont.
