When it comes to partying in Southeast Texas, any excuse will do. Beyond birthdays and anniversaries, we celebrate
the Neches River, hurricane survival, rice, crawfish, gators and many more celebration worthy occasions!
But if ever there was a grander reason to P-A-R-T-Y, it’s $800,000! That’s the amount of money Catholic Charities
has given to varying organizations since the nonprofit organization started its Harvest of Hope Gala in 2003.
Catholic Charities operates eight programs all funded by proceeds from the Gala and benefiting all people, regardless
of religious affiliation.
Anyone needing counseling, either an individual or family, can go to Catholic Charities counseling center.
There is a disaster loss and trauma unit for those needing any kind of assistance after a major disaster such as a hurricane. One program called ABC provides asset building case management and teaches individuals how to manage money, as well as the basics of good credit. Their Elijah House program not only offers grief counseling for children who have lost a parent or sibling, but also K.I.D.S – kids in divorce support. Catholic Charities has a full-time employee who does little else but work with individual parishes to help them
develop social services ministries so that parishes can help those who have social needs in the community. The immigration services ministry provides a variety of legal services, most of them free.
If you come to this year’s coat-and-tie dinner party honoring the Broussard Family of funeral directors Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. at the MCM Eleganté Hotel, the tables will be decorated with canned goods (the harvest) all being donated to Catholic Charities Hospitality
Center, the last of the eight ministries that this gala funds.
KFDM-TV’s Bill Leger will emcee and the Innovators will play get-up-and-dance music from the Blues Brothers to Van Morrison to the Kingsmen. Dance the night away knowing that you’ve given some of your harvest to others in our community who need hope.
Reservations are required. Tickets are $100 per person and 10-top tables are available at varying levels. Call Catholic Charities for more information at (409) 924-4421 or visit their Web site at www.catholiccharitiesbmt.org.

(Beaumont, Texas) Oct. 29, 2009 – Lamar University’s Grand Chorus and A Cappella Choir will premiere under the direction of new conductor James Han Sunday, Nov. 1, at the First United Methodist Church in Beaumont.

“Our theme for the concert is ‘Treasures from the Past and Today,’ and I think the selections all relate to the universal topics of healing, hope and looking forward to a brighter tomorrow,” said Han.  “Today’s life can be difficult, and our country is struggling with the economy, but we have hope that a better day will come.”

The Grand Chorus opens the concert with W.A. Mozart’s “Gloria” from his “Coronation Mass K. 317.”  Music by Franz Schubert and Leonard Bernstein will follow.

The A Cappella Choir takes the stage with Japanese composer Ko Matsushita’s 2008 composition “Jubilate Deo,” which combines eastern and western music into a Latin setting.

“Latin is the global language, and it is universal to choirs,” said Han.  “Ko Matsushita was born and raised in Tokyo and trained in Europe.  His music contains extremely complicated rhythmic patterns and intervals, but he beautifully pairs East and West.”

Han thought Matsushita’s work would challenge his students.

“It was 16 parts, and I asked them to memorize it,” Han said.  “They are working very hard, and I am proud of their dedication.”

Music by English composer William Byrd follows, as well as compositions by Mozart, Claudio Monteverdi, Johannes Brahms, Morten Lauridsen, Gabriel Fauré, Eric Whitacre and William L. Dawson.

According to Han, Whitacre is one of the most famous American composers of our time.

“Eric Whitacre is a rising star and world-renowned composer,” Han said.  “He creates a unique sound that is more dissonant than traditional music.  His work is quite impressive.”

Justin West will provide accompaniment for the Grand Chorus, while Dwight Peirce accompanies the A Cappella Choir.

The choral concert will start at 3 p.m.  Admission is free.  For more information, call (409) 880-8144 or visit www.lamar.edu/music.

01 Winter WhiteBEAUMONT, Texas — The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) presents Tropical Delights: Flora and Fauna, a collection of 20 paintings by San Antonio artist and psychiatrist Shyamala Rao, on view in Café Arts Nov. 5, 2009 through Jan. 31, 2010.

People and animals have always been sources of inspiration, joy and wonder for Rao. Tropical Delights is divided into two groups of paintings: flora and fauna. The flora paintings include Rao’s exploration of the hibiscus flower in different hues. The faunas are studies of tigers: Bengal, Siberian and Sumatran. This exhibition is a follow-up to the Serengeti Series that Rao exhibited at the Art Studio in Beaumont in December 2008. The Serengeti Series was prompted by the artist’s transforming experience during an African safari in the summer of 2007.

As a psychiatrist who practices in San Antonio, Rao’s professional life exists in a world where thoughts, feelings and perceptions are expressed in words. The realm of painting is a natural segue for this artist. In this medium, she moves into a space where the same gamut of emotions and cognitions are expressed not in words, but in form, line, tone and hue. The depiction of the range of human emotions is a passion with Rao in her profession, as are the depictions of the behaviors and emotions of animals in her artwork.

“The works in this café exhibit are interesting to examine when paralleled with the work that Shyamala Rao performs on a day to day basis in her professional life as a psychiatrist,” said AMSET Curator of Exhibitions and Collections Sarah Hamilton.

Tropical Delights: Flora and Fauna is open for viewing during regular museum hours. Two Magnolia’s serves lunch in Café Arts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, contact AMSET at (409) 832-3432 or visit www.amset.org.

Through unique collections, exhibitions, public programs and outreach in the visual arts, the mission of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas is to provide education, inspiration and creative vision throughout Southeast Texas.
