BEAUMONT, Texas — The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) invites children and their families to celebrate Halloween and Day of the Dead by feasting on fried crickets, decorating sugar skulls and enjoying a variety of exciting art activities and entertainment at “Eat a Bug!” Family Arts Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. Admission is FREE and open to the public.
The event is held in conjunction with the exhibitions The Madonna as Muse: The Paintings of René Alvarado and Eyes to Fly With (Ojos Para Volar): Photographs by Graciela Iturbide, which are on view through Jan. 3, 2010.
“‘Eat a Bug!’ Family Arts Day is a great Halloween celebration where children and their families can come explore our exhibits and enjoy FREE, family-oriented fun and festivities,” said AMSET Assistant Curator of Education Andy Gardner. “And of course, bugs will be in abundance for all the brave tasters.”
For the annual Family Arts Day that has fondly come to be known as “Eat a Bug Day” at AMSET, the main event will be the daring, adventurous tasting of bugs. Parents are encouraged to bring their most finicky eater to join the ever-growing club of bug-eaters young and old. Art activities planned for the day include making piñatas, paper flowers, papel picado (cut paper), sun prints, decorating trick-or-treat bags and Alvarado-inspired collages.
Also keeping with the harrowing holiday theme, AMSET will resurrect another popular activity – decorating sugar skulls. These skulls are traditionally used as part of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a Latin American holiday celebrated on Nov. 1 and 2. In addition, families are encouraged to visit the ofrenda created by artist René Alvarado and learn more about the holiday and its traditions.
Children are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes and participate in the costume contest that will be judged at noon. Live entertainment will also be provided by the Mexican Heritage Society.
