Combine lyrics of Christmas carols and you’ll be convinced that with Jingle Bells you can dash through the snow, rock the night away, chime, mix, mingle, hop and swing, laughing all the way. So, why not put on some bells and try running through downtown Beaumont?
On Dec. 5, at 8 a.m., runners and walkers will dash like Dancer and Prancer (or amble like Santa on Dec. 26), rain or shine, through the streets of downtown Beaumont for the City of Beaumont and YMCA’s Jingle Bell 5K Run. Stretching starts at 8:15 a.m. and runners will blast off at 8:30 a.m. with walkers (strollers allowed but no pets, please) beginning at 8:45 a.m.
Adorn yourself with bells and join the jingle jangle clan in a 3.2-mile (1-mile for walkers) course that will be more festive than the North Pole on Christmas Eve. Downtown Beaumont will be a mecca of holiday jubilation in preparation for all the day’s events that kickoff the Christmas season.
Check out this line up:
- Holiday Skating in the Beaumont Library parking lot from 10:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
- Museum District Children’s Holiday Party on the Art Museum of Southeast Texas grounds from 3 p.m. – 9 p.m.
- Live entertainment in the plaza between the Julie Rogers Theatre and the Library beginning at 5 p.m.
- Outdoor movie on the Tyrrell Historical Library grounds from 6- 8 p.m.
- Street parade at 6:30 p.m.
- Live entertainment and lighted boat parade at 7 p.m. at Riverfront Park.
Even if you are not a runner or even a walker, seeing the sights and sounds of the season will fill you with holiday spirit. Plus, wearing those Jingle Bells will transform you, like the songs proclaim. You’ll dash, rock, hop and swing, laughing all the way!

BEAUMONT, Texas — The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) invites community members to attend the 2009 Annual Meeting at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8. AMSET 2008-2009 Board of Trustees President Judy Black and Honorary Trustee Charles Locke will be honored. The meeting will serve to recap the past year’s events and preview upcoming exhibitions and events. A reception will immediately follow. The event is free and open to the public.
Black will be congratulated for another successful year as AMSET board of trustees president during very trying economic times, Under her guidance, the museum became accredited by the American Association of Museums; an accomplishment that would make any museum president and its supporters proud. Black passed the baton off to Linda Foutz, who became president on October 1, 2009.
Locke has been a faithful supporter of the museum since its inception through his annual president’s club membership, exhibition sponsorships and fund-raisers. Locke is always the first person to pick up his 10 Go for the Gold tickets and the first person to sell all of them and turn in his money. Over the years, he has continued to be a wonderful ambassador for AMSET.
Also during the meeting, AMSET Executive Director Lynn Castle will recognize former board of trustees member Paula “Torchy” Salter and introduce new board member W. Frank Newton. Salter served two consecutive terms of three years each. During her tenure, she raised the bar on successful fund-raising for AMSET by chairing numerous fund-raisers including three galas. Salter will continue to serve on the AMSET Advisory Board. Newton is the former dean of the Texas Tech University School of Law, current director of the Beaumont Foundation for America and also serves on the board of the Center for Advancement and Study of Early Texas Art (CASETA). He and his wife, Nancy, are Texas and Mexico fine art collectors.
Also, as at every annual meeting, the museum will recognize its most valuable asset – volunteers.
The public is encouraged to attend this important meeting. Light refreshments will be served. Call (409) 832-3432 for more information.
Through unique collections, exhibitions, public programs and outreach in the visual arts, the mission of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas is to provide education, inspiration and creative vision throughout Southeast Texas.

Catalogues
A great Christmas gift idea for the art lover or historian is AMSET’s newly published catalogue “James Abbott McNeill Whistler: Realism in Print – From the Dr. Richard L. Shorkey Collection.” The catalogue details the extraordinary collection of Whistler prints from the AMSET permanent collection, donated to the museum by the late Dr. Richard L. Shorkey. The cost is $25/hardbound or $15/softcover. It is available in the museum’s gift shop, which is open during weekday museum hours, or by mail order.
The AMSET Gift Shop also features many other publications from current or past exhibitions. Another popular item is the Felix “Fox Harris” book, chronicling the life and artwork of Beaumont self-taught artist and local legend Felix “Fox” Harris. Designed to accompany the semi-permanent gallery dedicated to Harris’s amazing totem-like folk art sculptures and interactive Web site, the book features photographs by fine art photographer Keith Carter and an essay by Patricia Carter, art collectors who befriended Harris in the 1980s. Cost of this hardcover book is $25.
In addition to exhibition catalogues, the gift shop carries custom-made jewelry and specialty arts and craft items created by local artists. These unique, hand-made items could be the perfect gift for that particular person on anyone’s list.
