(Beaumont, Texas) Nov. 16, 2009 – Lamar University Dance Company’s fall program will bring smiles to the faces of audience members young and old alike. The evening of dance works from LU students and faculty will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19, and Friday, Nov. 20, in the University Theatre.
The dance concert, titled “Fun & Games,” opens with an eclectic mix of dance styles, including a contemporary jazz ballet piece, a zany modern dance titled “Radio Active Balls,” a traditional praise dance and a piece choreographed by dance student Angel-Marie Goines, from La Porte. “Fun & Games” concludes with a restaging of legendary choreographer Donald McKayle’s seminal dance work, “Games.”
McKayle, one of the few remaining pioneers of African-American presence in modern dance, visited the Lamar campus in October to coach dance students in a restaging of “Games.” The Dance Heritage Coalition named McKayle “one of America’s irreplaceable dance treasures.” McKayle’s on-campus residency and the production of “Games” are made possible in part through a Dance: Masterpieces grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
“I think this concert definitely puts the ‘Fun’ in ‘Fun & Games,’” said Michelle Ozmun, assistant professor in the Department of Theatre & Dance. “It’s an exciting program. There is something for everyone.”
Guest performers from Collin College will join about 40 Lamar dance students for the concert.
The University Theatre is located on the campus of Lamar University at 4400 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, Beaumont. Tickets are $10 general admission; $7 for senior citizens, students and LU faculty/staff; and $5 for LU students. For tickets or more information, call the box office at (409) 880-2250.
