Habitat for Humanity of Jefferson County will be honored in Washington, DC, this Friday, January 22nd, at the National Community Development Association’s winter meeting. The local affiliate will receive the Audrey Nelson Community Development Achievement Award at the association’s luncheon.
Habitat 2010 Board President, Curtis Alexander, and Executive Director, Uliana Trylowsky, will travel to Washington on Thursday, January 21st, to receive the award on behalf of the affiliate.
The Audrey Nelson Award was established in 1987 to “recognize exemplary uses of CDBG funds which address the needs of families, homes and neighborhoods.” The Habitat affiliate will be recognized for its leveraging of local CDBG funds (from the City of Beaumont) to build out their 34 house neighborhood on Jenard Lane. 24 of those houses were built between 2006 and 2008 for hurricane Rita affected families.
Habitat for Humanity of Jefferson County is a Christian based, ecumenical not for profit organization whose mission is to eliminate poverty housing. We strive to do this by building modest, affordable homes together with motivated partner families who cannot afford a conventional or government-backed mortgage. Habitat houses are sold at cost through ZERO-interest mortgages. Since 1979, Habitat of Jefferson County has built and sold 100 houses, providing hard working families with renewed hope.
