Legacy Christian Academy is inviting the community to change a life.
On Tuesday, March 2, at 7 p.m., Legacy will hosts its second annual Jubilee Banquet featuring Sean Tuohy at the Holiday Inn Beaumont Plaza on Walden Road.
Sean Tuohy? That name rings a bell, right? It should. Tim McGraw recently portrayed Tuohy in the movie “The Blind Side,” the inspirational drama based on the life of Michael Oher. Tuohy and his wife, Leigh Anne (a feisty Sandra Bullock
in the movie) took Oher, a homeless teenager, into theirfamily. As a result of the Tuohy family’s love, care and time, Oher excelled in school and football, earned a full-ride scholarship to Ole Miss and became a NFL first-place draft pick.
Tuohy will tell how he and his family committed to change the teen’s life, and that is the exact message that Legacy wants to the community to hear – how children’s lives can be changed through time, love and character development.
“When I saw the movie, I knew I wanted Tuohy to come to our Jubilee,” said Bonnie
Spotts, marketing director at Legacy. “We’re a small Christian school, like the one Oher went to, and we want to educate but also send children away with much more.”
Legacy is a Christian nondenominational school with about 195 students in the sixth
through 12th grades. As part of the curriculum, students are required to attend daily chapel, four years of Bible class and perform 20 hours of service a year.
Each year Legacy awards scholarships in hopes of changing lives through unique educational opportunity. Legacy awarded 55 scholarships last year. Some of the scholarship recipients will speak at the Jubilee about how their lives have been changed as students of Legacy. A successful Jubilee Banquet will result in additional scholarship awards for the 2010-11 school year.
Tickets for the event start at $100. Ten-top tables are $1,000; $2,500; $5,000; $10,000 and $15,000. Those purchasing tables for $5,000 or more will attend a private reception with Sean Tuohy prior to the event in the Atrium of the Holiday Inn. Call Bonnie Spotts at (409) 924-0500, ext. 128.

6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 18, 2010
Tickets: $100 – includes dinner, cocktails and one entry in the Geaux for the Gold drawing

Beaumont, Texas — The Art Museum of Southeast Texas’ (AMSET) most popular and entertaining fund-raising event is getting a little added lagniappe this year, mon cher. On Thursday, March 18, Southeast Texans are invited to Geaux for the Gold – Cajun Style for a chance to win $10,000 in 2010! AMSET is spicing up this 15th annual party and reverse drawing that gives three lucky ticket-holders a chance to win unbelievable prizes in gold.

For the ticket cost of $100, guests receive admission, a delicious Cajun-style dinner and cocktails for two along with one entry into the most exciting drawing in town. Geaux for the Gold is a reverse drawing, meaning that the last three ticket stubs drawn from the hopper are the winners of:

1st Place  $10,000 in Gold

“This event represents a very exciting opportunity for someone to instantly turn a $100 investment into $10,000 in gold coins,” said AMSET Executive Director Lynn Castle. “Most importantly, this event raises funds to benefit the museum’s exhibitions and educational programs.”

Geaux for the Gold 2010 is co-chaired by Linda Foutz and Carla Allen. Gold coins for the evening will be provided for display by First Fidelity Reserve. Dinner will be provided by Two Magnolias.

Only 500 tickets will be sold for the event; advance purchase is recommended. To purchase tickets, go to www.amset.org or call (409) 832-3432.

The Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund has awarded a $65,000 one-year grant to the Julie Rogers “Gift of Life” Program to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer and facilitate the provision of free mammograms to medically underserved women in Southeast Texas. It is the third year that the program has received Avon Foundation funding to support its work on this important health issue and in recognition of the excellence of this program.

The “Gift of Life” Breast Cancer Program educates Southeast Texas women and makes available free mammograms and clinical breast exams in their own communities, giving gas cards and/or transportation to women in need. The vital program annually provides approximately 1,500 free mammograms, with over 16,300 women having received free mammograms since the organization’s inception in 1994. Eight medically underserved women, who were screened by the “Gift of Life” Program last year, have been diagnosed with breast cancer and provided access to treatment.

Since 1998, the “Gift of Life” Sidney “Chief” Dauphin Educational Outreach Program has reached more than 86,500 individuals with information about the importance of early detection of breast, prostate, and testicular cancer through approximately 80 annual presentations at churches, schools, and clubs, and participation at community health fairs.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women in the U.S. and the leading single cause of death overall in women between the ages of 40 and 55.  According to the American Cancer Society, 13,090 new cases of breast cancer will be detected in Texas this year and 2,570 lives will be lost.  Nationwide, there is a new diagnosis every three minutes and a death from breast cancer every fourteen minutes. While advances have been made in prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure, early detection still affords the best opportunity for successful treatment.  Programs such as the “Gift of Life” help ensure that all women have access to early detection information and options, even poor and medically underserved women.

“We are honored that the Avon Foundation continues to believe in the mission of our program and has chosen to support our efforts for a third year. With these funds, we will be able to further our healthcare efforts to provide lifesaving screenings for medically underserved women and expand program services in Southeast Texas,” says Regina Rogers, “Gift of Life” Founder and Chair.

Since 1993, the Avon Foundation has awarded more than 1,300 grants to community-based breast health programs across the United States, including the “Gift of Life.” These programs are dedicated to educating underserved women about breast cancer and linking them to early detection screening services.

The Avon Foundation for Women, an accredited 501(c)(3) public charity, was founded in 1955 to improve the lives of women and their families. Now past the half century milestone, the Foundation brings this mission to life through the Speak Out Against Domestic Violence program and the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade, which raises funds and awareness to advance access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on the medically underserved. Since 1992 the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has raised and awarded more than $640 million worldwide for medical research; access to care; support services; screening and diagnostics; and education and awareness. The largest fundraising program in the U.S. is the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer series.

The Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund

The Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund is administered by Cicatelli Associates Inc. to support community-based, non-profit breast health programs across the country.  The Fund’s National Advisory Board selected the “Gift of Life” Breast Cancer Program as one of 125 new grant recipients nationwide in the 2010 cycle of Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund grants.  These organizations were chosen based on their ability to effectively reach women, particularly minority, low-income, and older women, who are often medically underserved.

Artworks by 19 local high school seniors have been chosen to be exhibited in the 23rd Annual Protégé Competition and Exhibition at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET). The pieces will be unveiled to the public and winners announced at the opening reception and awards ceremony from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 25. In a special twist this year, the juror is Protégé 1999 first place winner Mark Ponder, who continued his career in art with great success.

Protégé will be on display at AMSET through March 28, and will then travel to selected area schools and other venues for further exposure and outreach in the Southeast Texas community.

The Protégé Competition and Exhibition is a program that offers area 12th-grade students the opportunity to begin taking the steps necessary to become part of the greater world of art. AMSET believes it is important for young artists to have an early opportunity to experience art competitions and, if accepted, learn how to properly exhibit their work. This year, AMSET received 114 total entries. The entries were submitted from 13 schools in the Region 5 Education Service area, along with one from the Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities and two from young artists working independently.

Having Ponder as Protégé 2010 juror truly brings this enduring competition full-circle. He is currently a visiting professor of art at Lamar University. Ponder’s journey from winning Protégé 1999 to judging Protégé 2010 will offer graduating artists a special insight into the importance of the competition and opportunities for exhibiting artwork.

Awards given will include: First Place – four-year art scholarship to the Lamar University Department of Art and a $225 gift certificate for art supplies from Manning’s Supply. The first place winner’s teacher or school will also receive a $125 gift certificate for classroom art supplies. Second Place – four-year art scholarship to the Lamar University Department of Art and a $150 gift certificate for art supplies. Third Place – $100 gift certificate for art supplies. Five Honorable Mentions – $50 gift certificate for art supplies.

This program is made possible through the generous support of Market Basket Food Stores. Additional funding is provided by Dorothy Anne Conn, the City of Beaumont, Texas Commission on the Arts, the Department of Art of Lamar University through a donation by the Friends of the Arts and Manning’s Office and School Supply.

Through unique collections, exhibitions, public programs and outreach in the visual arts, the mission of the Art Museum of Southeast Texas is to provide education, inspiration and creative vision throughout Southeast Texas.

Ford Fields is preparing for another successful year of baseball and softball tournaments, including the brand new addition of the USFA Texas State Tournament. The Fields are in great shape, which was evident the past two weekends as the season kicked off with the Valentine’s Day Classic and Spring Slam.

These tournaments represent a significant economic impact to the area from hotel, restaurant, gas and other purchases family members make during their stay over the course of a tournament weekend.  Last year’s baseball tournaments were responsible for over 7919 hotel room-night bookings, according to a report from the Beaumont CVB.
