The Art Museum of Southeast Texas is hosting the first of four Family Arts Days of 2010 on Saturday, Feb. 13, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the museum grounds. Come celebrate the seasons of our lives with art and your kids.
The event, “Set Your Sails for AMSET,” will commemorate Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras and Black History Month through fun, age-appropriate art projects and games.
Hans Molzberger’s “Pleasure Island” boat sculpture, on exhibit now, inspired the nautical theme. Children (and their parents) can view the sculpture and make their own paper boats, clay birds and linocuts.
Dr. Herby Hiner’s collection of works by African-American artists, which are mainly collages, is also on exhibit in honor of Black History Month. Children can make their own collages and play an African-American tick-tack-toe-related game, Achi.
Chinese New Year is Feb. 14 and if you attend the AMSET Arts Day, you’ll have a Chinese lantern just in time. Kids can construct and decorate their own lanterns.
Prepared for the Chinese New Year, young ones can then get ready for Valentine’s Day by making hearts with messages of adoration.
And, back by popular demand from last year – Mardi Gras masks. Children will be
given masks to decorate with feathers and green and purple fandangle to create until their hearts are content, or their fingers stick together from the glue.
It’s a full-blown festival with face painting, refreshments and live entertainment. At 11:30 a.m. in the lecture hall of the museum, David’s Heart Dance Theatre Company will perform African-American Dances, and at 12:30 p.m., 5-to-12-year-old girls will perform with Borden Chapel Missionary Baptist Church Angels Liturgical Dancers.
Make plans to attend this festive art affair and save the dates for future Family Arts Days: May 1: Playing in the Sand, Aug. 14: Flower Power, Oct. 30: Eat a Bug.
