The wicked winds of Hurricanes Rita and Ike twisted and turned not only the lives of Southeast Texans but also our lush landscape.
While we won’t soon forget our personal losses, terrain restoration is in the works thanks to one organization’s Wizard-of-Oz-like efforts
to turn everything green.
Beautify Beaumont Inc. is committed to restoring Beaumont’s lush tree canopy destroyed in 2005 and 2008 one seedling at a time.
On Saturday, Feb. 20, in the HEB parking lot at 10 a.m., this organization, thus far comprised of eight determined women, is going to give away 1,000 hardwood seedlings, with instructions for planting, free to the first 1,000 takers.
This ambitious “green” project, which the group refers to as Project 15/15, is the second undertaking since Beautify Beaumont was rekindled after being defunct for a number of years.
In November 2009, Beautify Beaumon planted two, 100-foot long rose beds in the median at the intersection of Kennedy and Phelan Blvd. and dedicated them to the organization’s founder, Maree Elizabeth Minturn Calcote. The goal of this second project, 15/15, is to plant 15,000 trees in Beaumont by the year 2015. The first 1,000 trees to be given away at HEB are 1-gallon hardwoods including Shumard Oaks, Sawtooth
Oaks, Redbuds, Chinkapin Oaks, Bald Cypress and Sweet Bay Magnolia.
The Mary Howell Garden Club and Munro’s Cleaners made financial contributions to help underwrite the project.
“We’re grateful for the donation and hope in the future we can raise awareness and additional monies to fund giving away even larger trees,” said Laurie Leister, Beautify Beaumont president. “In the very near future, we hope to partner with local companies to give 5-gallon trees and bigger.”
Beautify Beaumont envisions tree planting as a family affair and hopes Southeast Texas moms, dads and their munchkins will come out, get a tree, plant it and work together to nurture it and watch it grow.
If 15,000 trees are planted by the year 2015, Beaumont won’t need to “go green” — it will be the “Emerald City.”

While Time has hailed him as “perhaps the most popular comedian in the U.S.” and Slate called him “America’s favorite comedian,” Jeff Dunham has transcended his national praise to become an international sensation who packs top venues on tour, enjoys top DVD chart action, record TV viewers, hot-selling ringtones and more in a number of markets around the globe. As The New York Times Magazine notes in a recent feature story on Dunham, a video clip with his character Achmed the Dead Terrorist “has been viewed almost 100 million times and has made Dunham a star overseas,” emphasizing how the online fortune has fostered fertile ground for his international expansion.

His three DVDs — “Spark of Insanity,” “Arguing With Myself” and “A Very Special Christmas Special” — have been released on television, DVD, and mobile platforms in Canada, Great Britain, the Benelux countries, South Africa, Scandinavia and Australia. The holiday special went to #1 on the Danish Entertainment Chart when it was released, while “Spark” hit #2 on the Dutch DVD charts and #5 on South African DVD charts — scoring against all DVD releases including best-selling movies. When “Spark” and the Christmas DVD were released in the U.K. they were the only titles by an American in the nation’s comedy Top 20.

Echoing Dunham’s multiple ratings records in the U.S., “Spark” is the most-viewed show ever on Comedy Central Holland, and all three specials are also heavily broadcast and widely-watched in Holland, Belgium, Germany and the UK.  As well, Dunham’s comedic character ringtones have sold 300,000 copies and hit chart-topping ranks in the U.K., Denmark, Holland and South Africa.

After being named America’s top-grossing live comedy act of 2008 and 2009 by the concert industry trade Pollstar, Dunham and his cast of winning characters are also spreading their potent draw around the globe. 2009 saw him embark on his debut tours of Europe and Australia as well as his first full coast-to-coast Canadian tour. In Canada — where “The Jeff Dunham Show” series premiered as The Comedy Channel in Canada’s most-viewed show ever and then broke that record the following week — 20,000 tickets were sold in the first week of sale to his 10-show tour. This past April, Dunham sold a total of 25,000 seats at major venues in London, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and Helsinki on his European tour. London’s influential Time Out touted his first-ever appearance there as both a critic’s choice and recommended show and the Guardian named it Pick of the Week. And he just returned from playing four sold-out Australian shows in Sydney and Melbourne — cities where he has never traveled or performed before.

He will return in April 2010 to perform in Amsterdam, Dublin, and five cities in the U.K, capping his second European run with an appearance at London’s world renowned O2 Arena. His three shows in Amsterdam have already sold out the 10,000 available tickets in a mere hour-and-a-half of being on sale.

There are requests and plans to play in South Africa, Middle East and Asia.  Dunham happily discovered how his appeal straddles international borders as well as any cultural and language barriers in non-English speaking European cities earlier this year, when audience members would shout out his characters’ punchlines.

Jeff recalls, “it was pretty amazing. I had always hoped and dreamed that I’d do something important and special in this country but I never thought beyond the borders.”

Tuesday, February 16 – SETXsocialcenter.com went live with FACEBOOK and TWITTER integration on every calendar listing on its website of more than 4200 events occurring in Southeast Texas.
The site that launched in April of 2009 to unify the Southeast Texas nine county area, socially, by posting all events from blood drives to formal galas in one location, is now compatible with social media giants Facebook and Twitter.
“It was the logical next step,” said Kathy Catalano, co-owner and brainchild of SETXsocialcenter.com. “Our goal has always been to not only list but promote, promote and promote events happening in Southeast Texas. Now everyone can post events from our website to their Facebook and Twitter accounts with the click of the mouse, letting all their friends, fans and followers know of that event.”
Catalano and business partner Shelly Vitanza think Facebook and Twitter integration will have broad appeal.
“It’s an excellent tool for event planners who want to get the word out about their events as well as for someone who wants to let all of his friends know that a great concert is coming to town,” said Vitanza. “Anyone can go to one of the 4000 plus events and throw the event out to Facebook and Twitter by clicking the “F” or “T” icons.”
Each event listing on the SETXsocialcenter.com website already provides detailed event information, contact information, google mapping, the ability to download an event to a personal calendar or to invite a friend via email. Facebook and Twitter now complete the menu of options for events.
For example, someone interested in letting all of her friends know about Beautify Beaumont’s 1000 tree giveaway on February 20, can click that event on SETXsocialcenter.com and then click Facebook and the date, time, place and contact info for that event will be posted to her Facebook profile for all her friends to see.  Or a company like Courville’s who host concerts, can click on one of their concert listings and that event will be posted to the Courville’s Facebook page and/or Tweeted.
“Every organization has its calendar running on its site,” said Catalano. “But no other website compiles, organizes and maintains all of those individual organizational calendar listings like SETXsocialcenter.com does.  Now with Facebook and Twitter integration, Southeast Texas can truly be socially centered and we can all know the great events we have going on in our area, and share them with our BFFs!”
