Beaumont, Texas –– Beaumont’s Visionaries in Preservation (VIP) organization will begin creating the community’s preservation action plan on April 20, 2010 at Heritage Hall, 2985 French Road. VIP is the community planning program of the Texas Historical Commission (THC). VIP asks residents how they want their community to look and feel and provides the necessary tools to help Beaumont retain its identity and sense of place as it grows and changes.

Beaumont’s VIP program will meet once a month for eight months, starting in February and ending in September. At the end of the program, Beaumont will have a preservation action plan that will make historic buildings and other assets fundamental parts of continued economic and cultural growth.

At the past two meetings, Beaumont’s VIP members identified important preservation and livability issues throughout town and learned about modern preservation practice. At the upcoming third meeting, the membership will create a plan to address the issues.

Your participation is essential! Even if you could not make it last month, you can still take part in this important group.

With the celebration of Black Marriage Day on March 28,why not consider a great marriage enhancing resource available in Southeast Texas?
Family Services of Southeast Texas Inc., a nonprofit organization founded in 1930 to strengthen and empower families, individuals and communities through accessible behavioral health services, shelter services, education and advocacy, sponsors Twogether Marriage Workshops for those hoping and planning for wedded bliss.
These one-day, eight-hour educational workshops are offered in Beaumont, Silsbee, Orange, Port Arthur and Jasper to help couples have a better understanding of each others’ expectations, relevant backgrounds and to teach them how to communicate and resolve conflict effectively before they say, “I do.”
Because mating matters, all workshop providers are trained in a recognized marriage education curriculum approved by the state of Texas with backgrounds ranging from licensed mental health professionals, ministers and other trained marriage educators. This is a state initiative focused on reducing the rate of divorce.
An added benefit to nurturing nuptials in advance of ringing wedding bells is money off the price of the union! Couples who complete the free workshop save $60 off the cost of the marriage license fee at a county clerk’s office. The certificate is not only good for one full year for the couple who takes the course, but also waives the normal 72-hour waiting period that most couples must endure before they can marry.
There are Twogether Marriage Workshops scheduled from now through August including March 27 in Port Arthur, April 3 in Silsbee, April 10 in Orange and Jasper, and April 17 in  Beaumont. Call (409) 833-2668 for information or register online at www.servingtexasfamilies.org.
Family Services of Southeast at its new offices at 3550 Fannin in Beaumont is encouraging the community to celebrate National Black Marriage Day on March 28 by honoring couples in the community or church congregations that have managed to keep their unions solid.

People in Southeast Texas are gearing up for a little known celebration that actually has been taking place across America almost a full decade — National Black Marriage Day.  National Black Marriage Day is the main focus of the Wedded Bliss Foundation, founded in 2001 by Nisa Muhammad. Muhammad founded the organization to increase the success rate of all marriages in the black community.

Twogether in Texas Region 5, through Family Services of Southeast Texas, Inc. wants to encourage every community, organization, church and/or business to become a participant in National Black Marriage Day, to be celebrated on Sunday, March 28.

“We have sent letters with information and website addresses to all of our Twogether in Texas volunteer marriage education providers encouraging them to celebrate Black Marriage Day by planning an event, presenting an award to the couple that has proven to be a great role model for marriage, or to offer a brunch to all married couples in a congregation,” said Twogether in Texas Region 5 Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator Chris Hunter.

Region 5 covers a 15-county area in Southeast Texas. The goal of Twogether in Texas is to provide an eight-hour workshop to every couple in the state. Twogether in Texas wants to provide all couples with beneficial knowledge to handle crises as they arise in the marriage. The program emphasizes conflict management, communication skills and other key components that work toward making marriage a success. Black Marriage Day also incorporates many of these same issues into its program and takes it a step further by asking communities and/or church congregations to honor a couple in their community or congregation that has managed to keep their union solid.

This all began in 2000, when Muhammad was researching a fatherhood project and discovered a document in the Morehouse Research Institute — Turning the Corner on Father Absence in Black America.  In this paper, Muhammad learned that black married men earned more money than single black men. Intrigued by this, Muhammad began her journey to learn why the benefits of marriage made such a difference.

While researching answers to this question, Muhammad met Diane Sollee of Smart Marriages, the Coalition for Marriage, Family and Couples Education. Encouraged by what she learned, Muhammad soon formed the Wedded Bliss Foundation, where she reached her goal to bring resources, support and direction to the Black community. By March 2001, Black Marriage Day was established and Muhammad was well on her way to showing that happy marriages should be the norm rather than the exception.  Her goal remains that healthy relationships and healthy marriages enable children to grow up in a more stable environment with the benefits of a two -parent family. Now she encourages people throughout the United States to participate in the one-day celebration. Her goal through National Black Marriage Day is to change the hearts and minds of the adults in the Black community to cherish and celebrate the marriages that they have and encourage more to commit themselves to marriage so more children grow up with the gift of a two-parent family.

Beaumont’s Mayor Becky Ames is hitting the streets, and she’ll be in good company. Port Arthur Mayor Deloris Prince, Silsbee Mayor Herbert Muckleroy, Groves Mayor Brad Bailey and Nederland City Councilmember Bert Rogers are joining her for a charitable trek through Jefferson and Hardin counties.
March 24 is Mayors for Meals Day, and these local city officials will join forces with mayors across the United States to deliver meals to senior citizens as part of an annual national campaign, March for Meals.
Ames et al are aligning with local Mayors for Meals organizer Nutrition & Senior Services to raise awareness of senior hunger. Nutrition & Senior Services is a group dedicated to providing programs to assist older adults in leading quality lives by
providing a Meals on Wheels service, feeding 1,200 homebound seniors hot, nutritious weekday meals, as well as transportation services, a pantry program and many other critical senior services.
“It’s important for seniors to see that the community cares about them,” said program development coordinator Bridgett Hlavinka of Nutrition and Senior Services. “The receiver sees a city official and they feel special and important.”
Oftentimes Nutrition & Senior Services is the only link to the outside community for homebound seniors. Hlavinka says many seniors look for not only the meal provided but also friendship. “Our phones ring if a driver is late, and it’s not always about the food but about the visit and friendship,” said Hlavinka.
Feeling guilty because our officials are working to deliver 1,200 meals and you’re not? Then order a pie or some cookies. It’s the least you can do to support March for Meals, right?
To further increase awareness of the need for senior services, Nutrition & Senior Services sells pies and cookies as part of its “Sweets Fundraiser.” You can order a pie for $10 and an assortment of cookies at varying prices.
Pick a pie – chocolate meringue, coconut meringue, lemon meringue, baked lattice apple, Southern pecan, sweet potato, old fashion peach, blueberry, cherry or Boston cream – call (409) 892-4455 or (409) 722-7782 and then just pick it up at the agreed upon time. All pies must be ordered by March 29 and picked up by April 1 for Easter.
But the “Sweets Fundraiser” is year around! Order today and 48 hours later, you’re sweets are ready to eat.
